A Successful Sporting few weeks for Miss Preston.
Another crazy few weeks!
I have had the most physical few weeks yet as Miss Preston. In the past couple of weeks I have taken part in 3 charity netball tournaments.
The first netball tournament I played in was held at Leyland, all the money raised went to cancer charities. It was so hot all day and the weather shined. I played with the ladies I usually play with in the Blackpool and Fylde netball league; we entered for a bit of fun and it was even better when all the money went to charity. We were undefeated all day and won the tournament!
The second tournament I played in was the Preston City Games tournament, it did not stop raining all day but that didn’t dampen anyone’s spirits, just their clothes!
I played for Preston City Council netball team and all the girls were extremely welcoming and friendly. Unfortunately we didn’t make it through to the finals, but it isn’t always about winning, it’s about the taking part.
They have also said that I can take part again next year which was very pleasing to hear. Thank you for having me Preston City Council netball team!
Lastly I played in the SportsReach annual netball tournament last weekend. SportsReach is an interdenominational ministry which uses sport, especially soccer and netball, as a means to reach people of all ages with the life changing reality of a personal relationship with God through the Lord Jesus Christ.
Through sport, they seek to build friendships with all types of people, regardless of age, race, gender or religion to lead them to find wholesome, balanced lives with moral integrity through faith in Christ.
The weather wasn’t sunny or rainy so I couldn’t complain about being too hot or drenched through to the bone like the last tournament! I played for my home team, Garstang.
I have played for Garstang since I was at high school in year 9 so it is great to take part every year with the team I have played many years with, I almost feel like I have grown up with some of them.
In style we won every single one of our group games, this meant that we had to play the runners up of the other group in the semi-finals. The semi-final game was fast paced and exciting but we came out top winning 11-6.
This meant we had to await the results of the other semi-final being played next to us. In the other semi-final were our other Garstang Team, this team consisted of ex league players, many of these players I had played with in the past 9 years that had either gone to university away and therefore couldn’t play regularly on a Wednesday night or players that had work commitments.
They were battling out with the very strong Chipping Wildcats team unfortunately for Garstang Chipping came out on top.
We were saddened to see our other team get knocked out the tournament but this meant our opposition in the final were infact a team we had beaten in the group stages, so naturally we wanted to beat them again, by an even bigger score margin this time!
I look back in the game and can’t believe how exciting it was, Chipping had the lead for the majority of the game and at one point I wasn’t sure if we were going to take the lead. They had a 2 goal lead on us at half time, this carried on into the second half and I genuinely though we were running out of time.
We worked extremely hard to get a turnover and managed to make an interception which led to a goal all we needed was to do it two more times. Everyone worked so hard and we pushed them to make errors and we took advantage of this making the game level with 4 minutes to go.
It was our centre so we had to ensure to keep the ball safe and score. We took the lead, and to secure it even more we made another interception and took the lead by 2 goals with only just under 2 minutes of the match left. We held onto the ball for the win until the final whistle went.
I had a big sigh of relief and a huge smile on my face! We did it we won again, defending our title for the 3rd year running.
As you can tell I have had a pretty physical past few weeks but look forward to more in the future. I have always loved sport especially netball and I have had so much fun over the past few weeks.
Well done Garstang, well deserved!
